Some call them the golden years, the time to relax and enjoy the life you’ve worked and saved for. But often, there are challenges when things don’t turn out the way you’d planned. Finances and living arrangements often have to be addressed at this time of life.
For instance, many retirees find themselves still in the homes where they raised their children. They have too much room and not enough income to cover the expense of property taxes and maintenance. Some are without family and find it increasingly difficult to get by without assistance. Others are simply unable to stay ahead of steeply rising rental costs on a fixed income.
Fortunately, Central Ohio offers various senior living options to accommodate a range of budgets and lifestyle needs. There are also helpful resources available to guide you and determine whether you are qualified for housing assistance and how to apply for it.
Low-income Senior Living
From active and independent living to assisted living, skilled nursing facilities and memory care, there are many options for individuals with limited resources.
Lutheran Social Services operates 21 affordable senior housing communities in Ohio. They are subsidized by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Since these communities do not provide onsite healthcare or other amenities, they are best suited for seniors 62 years or older who are able to live independently.
For those with limited mobility or health issues, there are also senior communities that offer maintenance-free living, companionship and engaging activities tailored to residents’ interests. They also provide convenient access to various levels of health care.
Payment options include Medicare, Medicaid and HUD programs. Veterans may also be eligible for housing grants.
Qualifications for Low-income Housing
The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program helps seniors with low fixed incomes to afford safe, decent housing in the private rental market. Eligibility is based on several factors, including income limits, residency or citizenship status, rental history, background checks and placement in priority groups such as veterans. Meeting the criteria is not a guarantee of assistance. To see a full list of qualifications or to apply, visit the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority website or your local housing authority.
