Why Volunteering Matters: Five Benefits of Giving Back

Being able to give back is a powerful reminder that we’ve been blessed in our own lives. That’s especially true when it comes to spending our time, energy and skills with those who are going through hard times. The impact is profound – not only on those we serve, but on our communities and ourselves.

Volunteering allows me to put a smile in clients’ hearts, and they place a smile in mine. We are there for each other.” – Stephanie, LSS volunteer

Here are five ways making a difference makes a difference!

  1. Volunteering helps the community. Homeless shelters, food pantries and other organizations often operate with limited resources, depending heavily on donations, grants and volunteer support. When you freely give your time, you help keep these organizations running at full capacity, providing essential services to your community.
  1. It builds empathy. When you encounter people from other walks of life, you begin to understand there’s not much difference between them and you. Serving meals to hungry people or tutoring children deepens your respect for others, broadens your perspective and breaks down social barriers.
  1. It promotes new skills. One great thing about volunteering is you often don’t need experience, just enthusiasm! You learn as you go, picking up practical skills you can leverage in your personal and professional life. This can be especially valuable for young people building resumes and establishing contacts and references. For some, it can even lead to a whole new career direction.
  1. It positively impacts mental health. Volunteering can create a sense of purpose and fulfillment, often increasing feelings of self-worth, reducing stress and even helping combat depression.
  1. It creates a ripple effect. When you find something you believe in, something that gives you purpose and direction, you naturally want to share it with others. Remember, many hands make light work.

Volunteering, by its very nature is, well, voluntary. But it’s also necessary. If you have ever thought about lending a hand, but don’t know where to begin, Lutheran Social Services is a great place to start volunteering.
