Features of the new CHOICES shelter
Due to the support of our community and generosity of many donors, the new shelter opened in January 2019.
Before it opened, the lack of space at the old shelter was one of the largest challenges. There were 51 beds but frequently 75 or more people seeking safety. The new shelter increased the number of beds to 120, with capacity to add 48 more beds in the future.
It also has a neighborhood feel with bedrooms, bathrooms and a sitting room in each neighborhood. There are several communal areas and counseling rooms, as well as space for youth programs and a secure outdoor playground and garden.
135% more Capacity
Bed capacity in the new shelter will more than double–from 51 to 120.
Dignity & Respect
Domestic Violence-specific clinical models and design concepts will accommodate the specialized needs of victims and their families.
State-of-the-art Security
Security cameras & lighting will be used as well as a physical security access control system & personal safety alarms for staff.
Kennels for Pets
Pet enclosures & exercise areas will be available, removing a barrier for victims who don’t want to leave their pet with their abuser.
