LSS CHOICES defines domestic violence as physical assault, psychological, emotional, economic and/or sexual abuse between intimate partners. Domestic violence cuts across all geographic, religious, socio-economic, racial, sex and age barriers. Domestic violence is learned, criminal, generational, cyclical and is correlated with substance abuse. Domestic violence increases in frequency and severity within a relationship yet is not a relationship issue. It is estimated that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime.
- Domestic violence exists and is a problem.
- No family member deserves to be abused by an intimate partner.
- No person has the right to abuse their intimate partner.
- Everyone has the right to a violence-free household.
- CHOICES has a responsibility to adult victims of intimate partner violence.
- Intervention can help.
- PRIMARY responsibility for the acts and behaviors of individuals belongs to those individuals.
- SECONDARY responsibility belongs to society.
LSS CHOICES for Victims of Domestic Violence, formerly Phoenix House, began service to the central Ohio community in October 1977. It was one of the first programs in the state to address the needs of abused women and their children. Over the years, CHOICES has developed from a shelter facility into a multi-site, full service agency.
The staff at LSS CHOICES are deeply connected to the mission and values of the LSS Network of Hope. It’s our responsibility to not only help people in need but to maintain their dignity in doing so. We walk alongside our clients and their families as they strive to find safety and healing.
Victims come to LSS CHOICES at different stages in their lives but for one very important reason, to find safety and healing. Each person’s story is unique. We strive to meet our clients and residents where they are and serve them as individuals so that they can better their lives. Here are some of those unique stories.
