Homelessness in our community

Learn more about homelessness and how it affects the people of Columbus.

Columbus is a vibrant, growing city, but with the increase in population and needed housing comes increasing rents, a lack of safe and affordable housing, and more people suffering with the effects of living in poverty.

From 2021 to 2022, homelessness in Columbus increased 22%. In 2023, 7,865 people received shelter through the emergency shelter system, while many more lived on the streets or moved from place to place without a stable place to sleep.

Common Reasons for Becoming Homeless

Homelessness is a complex issue that affects many people in cities across the country, and Columbus is no exception.  Each person who comes through our doors is unique in their life experiences and current situation. Some of the common challenges facing those experiencing homelessness include:

Lack of affordable housing

Columbus housing market has become increasingly expensive, making it very difficult for low-income individuals and families to find affordable, safe and sanitary housing.

Physical and mental health conditions

Chronic conditions, injuries and mental health issues, compounded by a lack of access to proper health care, often impact employment and the ability to maintain stable housing.

Changes in relationship status

When there is a change in a relationship, whether it is a divorce, break up or even the loss of a roommate, this impacts costs of living. For many people who are financially vulnerable, finding stable housing solutions in Columbus can exasperate an already stressful situation. This also impacts individuals fleeing domestic abuse.

Job Loss

Unemployment, underemployment and general low wages, coupled with inflation, especially on food and other household expenses, can leave some people with a lack of housing options in Columbus.
