Interrupting the Cycle of Violence
Domestic violence is a terrible and increasingly pervasive problem that tears apart families and communities. Victims and their children who are living with an abuser need a safe place to go to break the cycle of violence and begin the healing process. LSS CHOICES for Victims of Domestic Violence has been the sole resource for victims seeking shelter in Franklin County for more than four decades.
As part of the Lutheran Social Services’ Network of Hope, our mission is to create a better world by serving people in need. We live out our faith by interrupting the cycle of domestic violence in our community and advocating for social change.
Gaining Freedom: Crystal’s Story
As a teenager, Crystal experienced a violent sexual assault that left her self-esteem in tatters and made her vulnerable to a string of relationships with abusive men. During her last relationship Crystal had a rare lunch alone with her parents where she confessed how awful things were with her current abuser. This revelation set in motion in chain of events where her parents helped Crystal to safely reach LSS CHOICES. She was surprised and grateful for the variety of services offered by CHOICES, including counseling, self-care classes and case management. “My therapy has been very intense, allowing me to unravel so much stuff,” she said. Crystal is excited that she will be moving into an apartment soon, the first place she has ever had on her own. She feels empowered by the recognition of her own self-worth. “I’m overwhelmed at the life I know I can have,” Crystal said. “I’m driven to get my story out there because I don’t want anybody else to go through this.”
