Domestic violence or abuse is a pattern of behavior in a relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over another person. It does not have to be physical. Intimate partners may be married or not married; heterosexual, gay, lesbian, or transgender; living together, separated or dating.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Abuse often starts with actions like isolation, jealousy, threats, or name-calling, and can escalate to more severe forms, including emotional, sexual and verbal abuse. It may even progress to physical violence like pushing, hitting or kicking, causing serious injuries or worse.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The main goal of domestic violence is to maintain control over the victim. Abusers use various tactics, not just physical violence, to assert power. It’s important to know that domestic violence can affect people from all walks of life, regardless of race, age, religion or socioeconomic background. Children in homes with domestic violence are at a higher risk of abuse and neglect. Constant exposure to violence not only puts them at risk for social and physical problems but also teaches them that violence in relationships is normal.
